How to get to Mu Cang Chai?

Mu Cang Chai is located in the western region of Yen Bai, tucked away on the western slope of the Hoang Lien Son – Pung Luong mountain range. The only accessible route is through National Highway 32, as other paths are dangerous and suitable only for experienced travelers and locals.

Though it’s only about 300 km from Hanoi, the journey to Mu Cang Chai is more challenging than reaching destinations like Sa Pa or Moc Chau due to the numerous mountain passes and steep roads.

  • By Bus: From Hanoi, you can take a bus or book tickets in advance at My Dinh Bus Station. Most buses to Mu Cang Chai pass through Nghia Lo town, while a few take the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway to pick up passengers heading to Mu Cang Chai.

  • By Motorbike: For a safe trip, you can rent a motorbike through motorbike tour services. The traditional route along National Highway 32 is often recommended with the following itinerary: My Dinh – Nhon – Son Tay – Cau Trung Ha Ba Vi (or Dong Quang Bridge turning left at Son Tay toward K9) – Thanh Thuy – Thanh Son Phu Tho – Tan Son Thu Cuc – Ba Khe – Van Chan – Nghia Lo town – Tu Le – Khau Pha Pass – Nga Ba Kim – Mu Cang Chai town. To arrive in time for lunch, it’s advised to start your journey at around 5 AM from Hanoi.

The districts and communes in Mu Cang Chai, such as Nam Khat, Pung Luong, De Xu Phinh, Lao Chai, Khao Mang, and La Pan Tan, are filled with these flowers, especially in the two villages of Trong Tong in La Pan Tan commune. Tu Le commune in Van Chan district, Yen Bai province, located 3 km from Khau Pha Pass, is famous for its distinct nep tan sticky rice variety. Crossing a charming suspension bridge, you’ll find narrow paths winding steeply up the mountains.
